Factors for High-Quality Patient Care

Act passed to prevent employers from exhibiting discrimination based solely on age.

Ethnocentrism

Tendency of individuals to view norms and values of their own culture as the only acceptable ones, and then use them as the standard by which all other cultures are measured.

Assimilation

A process where a person gives up their original culture and language to merge with another culture.

Biculturalism

The ability to understand and participate in, and comfortably navigate 2 different cultures at the same time.

Heterosexuality

Being mentally, physically, and sexually attracted to the opposite gender.

Homosexuality

Being mentally, physically, and sexually attracted to the same gender.

Bisexuality

Being mentally, physically, and sexually attracted to both genders.

Homophobia

An irrational fear of homosexuality followed by hostility towards gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals.

Kinsey Scale 0

Exclusively heterosexual experiences.

Kinsey Scale 1

Predominantly heterosexual (attracted to opposite sex, but occasionally experiences same-sex attraction); same-sex attraction is only incidental and not a significant part of their sexual orientation.

Kinsey Scale 2

Mostly heterosexual experiences, but has consistent and notable same-sex attraction experiences that are a part of their orientation or identity.

Equally heterosexual and homosexual experiences.

Mostly homosexual experiences, but more than incidentally heterosexual (rare, but occurs).

Also known as human diversity; the variety of human societies and cultures, and human differences.

Globalization

Crossing borders into another country to work, go to school, receive medical care, and live.

Cultural Competency

Possessing a set of behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system or among individuals to create and encourage effective interactions in a cross-cultural framework.

Characteristics of Diversity

Diverse characteristics including age, disability, economic status, education, ethnicity, family status, first language, gender, geographic location, lifestyle, organizational level, physical characteristics, political affiliation, religious preference, sexual orientation, and work ethic.

Baby Boomer

Age category for individuals born 1946 thru 1964; it is projected that more than 100 million baby boomers will live to 100.

Gen X

Age category for individuals born between 1965 and 1980.

Gen Y

Also known as Millennials; age category for individuals born between 1981 and 1999.

Gen Z

Also known as the New Silent Generation; age category for individuals born from 2000 to present.
