Learn Reading: Phonemic Awareness Vocabulary

Phonemic awareness

The ability to be aware of each individual phoneme (or sound) within a syllable, as well as manipulate and articulate them each properly, without print.

Stretch and Separate

An exercise where a student says a word slowly in one breath, then separates each sound completely with "breath breaks" between each sound.

First Sound

An exercise where the student identifies the first sound only in each word.

Last Sound

A Phonemic Awareness exercise where the student identifies the last sound only in each word.

Pick a Sound

An exercise where the student chooses any dot under a word and identifies the sound that the dot represents.

Learn Reading

A "real-world" reading acquisition program for learners of all ages that introduces letters and sounds one at a time in the order they appear in everyday, English print.

Phoneme

An individual sound within a syllable.

Multisensory learning techniques

Learning methods integrated by the Learn Reading program to engage the student by drawing on prior knowledge and encouraging curiosity.

Controlled blending

One of the specific areas of development and instruction provided by the Learn Reading program, along with fluency and decoding.

Consequences of lacking phonemic awareness

The absence of this skill will "lock in" bad reading habits, reinforce guessing, and negatively impact comprehension and fluency.
