Health
A dynamic state of physical, mental, and social well-being, as well as the absence of disease or abnormal conditions.
Illness
A state of imbalance and the body's way of communicating its need for attention, often with strong psychosocial aspects.
Stage 1: Symptoms
The initial stage of the illness experience where the individual becomes aware that something is wrong and may self-medicate or seek alternative remedies.
Stage 2: The sick role
The stage where sickness is confirmed through social interactions, allowing the individual to assume a sick role or deny illness.
Stage 3: Medical care
The stage when medical intervention is sought after symptoms persist, leading to confirmation of illness and treatment.
Stage 4: Dependency
A stage where the individual is relieved of obligations but is expected to recover, needing emotional support and information.
Stage 5: Recovery and rehabilitation
The final stage when the individual resumes normal obligations and duties after recovering from illness.
Denial
A protective mechanism that can be useful by warding off painful feelings or paralyzing by preventing acknowledgment of illness.
Situational crisis
A crisis related to external or environmental problems, often experienced during hospitalization.
Three stages of hospitalization
Psychosocial care
Care that addresses emotional needs and well-being, equally as important as physical care.
Therapeutic interventions
Actions that involve psychosocial attention to support the emotional needs of ill persons.
Discharge planning
The process of ensuring that clients’ problems are identified early for effective transition from hospital to home, addressing anxieties.
Nondrug methods for managing pain
Alternative pain management techniques that are subjective and individual-specific, often involving natural remedies.
Impact of family interactions
Significant others' emotional support and family dynamic can greatly affect the client's illness outcome.
Psychiatric hospitalization
Differentiated from physical hospitalization in that the individual and family must cope with stigma and different support dynamics.
Common reactions to hospitalization
Responses to hospitalization stress similar to reactions to other crises, influenced by psychological and emotional factors.
