Separate
A characteristic of the self meaning it is distinct from other selves, always unique, and has its own identity.
Self-contained and Independent
A characteristic of the self indicating that in itself, it can exist.
Consistent
A characteristic of the self meaning it has a personality that is enduring and therefore expected to persist for quite some time.
Unitary
A characteristic of the self meaning it is the center of all experiences and thoughts that run through a certain person.
Private
A characteristic suggesting that the self is isolated from the external world.
Plato's Concept of the Self
The view that our soul is divine, unchanging, eternal, and composed of virtues, while the body is either a shell or a prison to house the soul.
Aristotle's Concept of the Self
The view that the self or human person is essentially composed of body and soul, which are inseparable.
Social Constructionism
A perspective arguing for a merged view of the person and their social context, seeing the self as malleable and constantly participating in social life.
Moi
According to Marcel Mauss, a person's sense of who he is, his body, basic identity, and biological givenness.
Personne
According to Marcel Mauss, the social concepts of what it means to be who a person is, shaped by institutions, family, religion, nationality, and behavioral expectations.
Gender
A locus of the self subjected to alteration, change, and development that has to be personally discovered and asserted rather than dictated by culture and society.
Ideal Self
The self that you aspire to be, which you hope will possess characteristics similar to a mentor or worldly figure.
Actual Self
The self that you actually see, built on self-knowledge and containing characteristics that you were nurtured or born to have.
Self-Concept
An individual's awareness of oneself, conceived as a collection of multiple, context-dependent selves.
Self-Knowledge
Insight derived from social interactions that provide information on how others react to a person.
Personal Effectiveness
Making use of all personal resources—talents, skills, energy, and time—to enable a person to achieve life goals.
Determination
A personal effectiveness skill that allows focusing only on achieving a specific goal without being distracted by less important things or spontaneous desires.
Self-confidence
A skill developed by learning oneself and capabilities, gaining a positive attitude, and believing that performing right actions reaches success.
Persistence
A skill that keeps a person moving forward regardless of emerging obstacles, problems, laziness, or a bad emotional state.
Managing Stress
A personal effectiveness skill that helps combat stress arising in daily life from the environment and other people.
Problem Solving Skills
Skills that increase efficiency by adopting new ways of achieving goals when obtaining a new experience.
Creativity
A skill that allows finding extraordinary ways to carry out a specific action that no one has tried to use.
Generating Ideas
A skill that helps achieve goals using new, original, and unconventional ideas.
Physical Aspects of the Self
The tangible aspects of an individual as they relate to the body.
Intellectual Aspects of the Self
The conscious aspects of an individual as they relate to the mind.
Emotional Aspects of the Self
The intuitive aspects of an individual as they relate to the spirit.
