Who was the concept first introduced by?
Flavell 1979
Quote from Flavell
metacognition refers to someones knowledge concernign oneās own cognitive processes and products of anything related
Metacognition and awareness (consciousness) people quoted ?
Vygotsky (1962) + Gourgey (1998)
Gourgey (1998) defined metacognition as :
ābroadly defined as awareness and control of oneās learning and is considered to be āessentail to intelligent functioningā ā
Vygotsky (1962) defined metacognition as :
the activity of conscientiousness can take diff directions
e.g. I tied a knot without but i cant explain how because my awareness was centred on knot rather than my motions
so āwhen the latter becomes the object of my awareness of the activity of the mind - the consciousness of being consciousāā
2 dimensions of metacognition
metacognitive knowledge + metacognitive regulation
3 types of knowledge included in Metacognitive knowledge
declarative knowledge
procedural knowledge
conditional knowledge
declarative knowledge
knowledge abt oneself as a learner + factors that influence your learning
procedural
knowledge abt carrying out strategies - perform a procedure
conditional knowledge
knowledge abt when and why to use the strategies
what is included in metacognitive regulation
planning
monitoring
evaluating
planning
Selecting appropriate strategies, assigning resourses, goal-setting
Monitoring
self-testing / keeping track of oneās understanding & performance
Evaluating
assessing the final result of oneās learning
(Gourgey, 1998, p82)
Whereas cognitive strategies enable one to make progress āto build knowledge metacognitive strategies enable one to monitor and improve oneās progress to evaluate understanding and apply knowledge to new situations.
Thus, metacognition is vital to cognitive effectiveness
Cignitive strategies
mind maps, rehearsal, cover and
check, completing past papers ā aka ārevision techniquesā
Metacognitive strategies
= Looking at performance on past papers to work out which types of answers you got wrong and why
