Policial Socialization
the process through which an individual acquires his/her particular political orientations-his/her knowledge, feeling, and evaluations regarding the political world (family, mass media, schools, and peers are important influences or agents) experiences and factors that shape an individual’s political ideology (family and hom influences are #1)
political culture
dominant set of beliefs, customs, traditions, and values that define the relationship between citizens and the government
Individualism
the belief that individuals should be responsible for themselves and the decisions they make
Equality of Opportunity
the US was founded on the idea that social status is based on effort, rather than inherited position; everyone should be able to influence government decision-making (while Americans value equality of opportunity, they often do not support equality of result)

began in 1930s when George Gallup helped develop the use of a scientific polling process that includes sampling, preparing valid questions, controlling how the poll is taken, analyzing and reporting results
