  • there is a distinct lower-class subculture below the wc called the underclass

  • they’re defined by long term unemployment

  • they lack: moral values, commitment to marriage and family life

  • larger percentage of kids in the underclass are raised by single mothers who are allegedly inadequate and irresponsible parents

  • absent fathers mean the children lack discipline and a apprirpoate role model

  • as a result young male turn to delinquent role models on the street

  • and gain status through crime rather than supporting families through legitimate jobs

  • generally hostile to police and authority

  • see the underclass as the main cause of crime In inner city and council estates

  • ysc that involve the underclass are always deviant and will lead to criminal gangs later in life

the bell curve

  • some ppl are born biologically predisposed to aggressiveness, impulsiveness, argumentativeness and these are more likely to lead to crime

  • impulsive ppl take risks without thinking of the consequence , stealing without thinking of punishment

  • aggressive ppl will resort to violence more

  • low intelligence is linked to poverty being unemployed and welfare dependancy

  • low iq increased risk of deviancy and criminality and more likely to join a criminal subculture like a gang and the drugs trade

  • this will happen in intervention isn’t taken soon enough/ socialised into acceptable behaviours by primary institutions like the family so that biological personal traits like impulsivity and lack of empathy and controlled/changed

  • nuclear families with a strict father figure are helpful as strict enforcement of rules and school and laws in society

marsland

gov is responsible for the rise in welfare dependant underclass as welfare dependancy has undermined peoples sense of commitment and obligation to support each other

  • other words ppl don’t feel obliged to be successful as they know the state will look after them if they become unemployed/ homeless so why bother with responsibility?

  • under class are allegedly workshop, choose state bens over working

  • young ppl who have never had jobs/ get pregnant young are irresponsible and the gov should cut benefits to encourage independence

white collar crime

mc crimes like white collar sand tax evasion is far more costly to the gov than welfare benefit claimants

but it is easier for the rich to scapegoat and blame younger wc people especially since they are in a a visible subculture
