virus

designed to spread from host to host and has the ability to replicate itself; viruses cannot reproduce and spread without programming such as a file or document; type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a computer operates

worm

small piece of software that uses computer networks and security holes to replicate itself. Replicates without user intervention and is capable of self-replication

trojan horse

computer program that claims to do one thing but does damage when the user runs it (e.g., says it’s an anti-malware program but could erase the user’s hard drive when it is run)

ransomware

a malicious software that threatens to publish or blocks access to data or a computer system

keylogger

software program or device designed to secretly monitor and log all keystrokes

rookit

malware that gives the attacker complete access and control over the targeted device
