Citation Style
A set of rules on how to give credit to individuals for their intellectual and creative work and guidelines on how to cite sources in academic papers.
Relevance
The criterion used to evaluate how well a source supports a research topic by checking elements like the title, table of contents, or abstract.
Authority
The criterion focusing on the author's qualifications, including their background, education, and whether they are affiliated with a reputable university.
Currency
The evaluation criterion that determines whether information is up-to-date and reflects recent developments.
Plagiarism
A serious offense where someone uses the ideas, information, concepts, or arguments of another person without proper citation.
Scholarly Writing
The practice of exhaustively using related expert ideas and properly attributing them to the original source.
Parenthetical Citation
An in-text citation style where the source information is provided within parentheses, referring to a corresponding entry in the reference list.
Reference List
A term used in APA format for an alphabetical list of sources titled "References" that corresponds to in-text citations.
Works Cited
An alphabetical list of sources quoted or paraphrased in a paper, generally used in MLA format.
Bibliography
A list of all materials consulted during research, whether or not they were actually cited in the paper, often used in Chicago and Turabian styles.
APA 7th Edition
A citation style developed by the American Psychological Association used for social sciences, psychology, education, and business.
MLA 9th Edition
A citation style developed by the Modern Language Association commonly used in literature, arts, and humanities.
IEEE
A citation system used in engineering that lists sources in a numbered reference list corresponding to numeric markers in the text.
AMA 11th Edition
A citation style used in medicine and health sciences that utilizes numerical in-text citations written in superscript.
Chicago Style
A style guide containing two systems: notes and bibliography (humanities) and author-date (sciences).
Author-Date System
The specific APA in-text citation format consisting of the author’s last name and the year of publication.
et al.
A Latin abbreviation used in citations to indicate three or more authors.
n.d.
An abbreviation used in APA citations when the publication date is unknown, standing for "no date."
Container
A core element in MLA 9th edition that refers to the larger work (like a journal or website) that contains the specific source.
DOI (Digital Object Identifier)
A unique string used to identify and provide a persistent link to content on the internet, typically included at the end of a reference.
