Transition Words Grammar

Used to clarify how ideas relate, not used to fix run-ons.

  • Transition words connect two independent clauses

    • Semicolon+transition+comma

    • Ex: I was tired; however, I kept running.

  • Comma after the transition word

    • Therefore, we left the theater early.

  • Transition used mid-sentence.

    • The movie, however, was too long.

    • no matter placement, assume it’s at the start/signifies relationship with the sentence before it

  • Subordinating Conjunction Transition words

    • don’t need a semicolon before them

      • because, although, even though, while, since

  • Only use one transition word per category in a sentence

    • don’t use unnecessary transitions when the relationships already clear

    • Ex (incorrect): Since it was raining, therefore we stayed inside.

  • Transitions don’t fix run-ons

    • Cannot go after a comma or go between two independent clauses without fixing the run-on.

    • Ex (incorrect): I studied all night, however I failed the test.

    • Ex (correct): I studied all night; however, I failed the test.

      • or: I studied all night. However, I failed the test.

Subordinating Conjunctions

Only words that make a sentence incomplete/dependent (not any transition word)-usually cause & effect

SWAB (Since, While, Although, Because)
