The hatred of books is important for the lower castes to have because they do not need to waste time reading books that may take their conditioning away.

15
New cards

18
New cards

What is hypnopaedia and how did it evolve?

Hypnopaedia is the act of learning while the person is asleep. At first, it was developed in order for the children to learn facts about the world. However, it was turned into a way for children to be content in their castes (became part of the conditioning process).

New cards

What are some examples of hypnopaedic messages?

For the Betas, they are told they don't want to play with Deltas or Epsilons because Epsilons are stupid and wear black; they're told they're glad that they're not Alphas because Alphas work too hard; Gammas are stupid.

He said that it was "Not to be published" and that the author should be kept under supervision and may even need to be transferred to St. Helena. Although the paper was "a masterly piece of work", it didn't fit with the society's conditioning; it may make people ask questions and lose their faith in the happiness that the World State provides.

In Romeo and Juliet, Helmholtz couldn't handle the line "O sweet my mother".

You meet the most interesting men and women throughout the world who have independent ideas of their own (Mond is almost envious of Helmholtz for this reason)

78
New cards

Why did society give up on religion?

Mond believes that religion and God are only for the people who are going through rough times or old. Once they started creating happiness through soma and stopping aging, God wasn't needed. In other words, society provides everything that God would have provided, so there is no need for God.

79
New cards

Who is old?

God and the Bible (because He is old, God is hard to control and mass produce).

80
New cards

He says it's a way for everyone to be virtuous, and you can carry all of your morality in a bottle. He calls it "Christianity without consequences."

What is the reason John gives Helmholtz and Bernard for leaving?

He doesn't want to be part of Mond's experiment anymore.

It's too beautiful-John believes he's allowing himself too much joy by staying in a place so beautiful.

87
New cards

Why can't John appreciate the lighthouse?

Because he didn't put the work in to get it. He didn't have to make it. It was there for him

88
New cards

Why does John whip himself and force himself not to sleep and buy the worst flour and worst seeds?

To make himself "pure" and to get forgiveness from God.

89
New cards

What happened with the video that Darwin took of John?

It was turned into a feely (caused people to come and see John whipping himself at the lighthouse).
