Urinary Catheter
A device inserted through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine into a drainage bag.
Straight Catheter
A type of catheter that drains the bladder and is then removed immediately after use.
Indwelling Catheter
Also known as a retention or Foley catheter; it is left in the bladder for a period of time to provide continuous drainage.
Catheterization
The specific process of inserting a catheter into the bladder.
Closed Drainage System
A system used for indwelling catheters where nothing can enter the setup from the catheter to the drainage bag.
Leg Bag
A type of drainage bag that attaches to the person's thigh or calf and is typically worn when they are standing or upright.
Lumens
The two passage-ways within an indwelling catheter: one used to inject sterile water to inflate the balloon and the other to drain urine.
Condom Catheter
Also referred to as an external catheter, Texas catheter, or urinary sheath; it is a soft sheath that slides over the penis for incontinent men.
Dysuria
A common symptom, along with urinary frequency, that occurs after the removal of a catheter.
Residual Urine
The amount of urine left in the bladder after voiding, which can be measured using a catheter.
Elastic Tape
The specific type of tape used to secure condom catheters; adhesive tape should never be used as a substitute.
