Yellow spots located on the lips or just inside the mouth, sebaceous glands

Serous

thin, watery saliva, breaks down starch in mouth

Mucous

thicker saliva, ropey look, and allows lubricates oral cavity

Parotid

Largest gland, secrete serous saliva only, empties through stensen’s duct

Submandibular gland

Gland that produces both mucous and serous saliva, located beneath the lower jaw and empties through wharton’s duct

Sublingual

Located anterior to the sublingual gland, under the tongue, empties through Wharton’s duct and secretes serous and mucous.

Von Ebner’s Gland

Small serous glands at base of circumvallate papilla on dorsal side of tongue

Functions of Saliva

Chewing, serves as solvent, digests carbs, lubricates food and oral cavity, acts as buffer, and acts to slow growth of some bacteria
