Covalent Bonding
A shared pair of electrons between two non-metal atoms.
3 properties of simple molecular substances
Low melting and boiling points
Don’t conduct electricity
Some are soluble in water, and some aren’t
Giant covalent structures
Solids containing atoms which are all bonded to each other by strong covalent bonds.
3 properties of giant covalent structures
High melting and boiling points
Don’t conduct electricity
Not soluble in water
Carbon allotropes
The element carbon can form a number of different molecules, different structural forms of the same element are known as allotropes. Carbon allotropes are diamond, graphite and fullerenes.
Fullerenes
A molecule composed entirely of carbon atoms, arranged in a hollow sphere.
