New Zealand Settlements Act 1863

Colonial legislation passed during the Waikato War that authorized the Crown to seize over 1.2 million hectares (3 million acres) of land from Iwi labeled as "in rebellion" to establish military settlements and sell to European settlers.

Raupatu

The widespread confiscation of Māori ancestral lands, which was legalized by the colonial government through the New Zealand Settlements Act 1863.

Tangata Whenua

The indigenous people of the land who were defending their homes and were declared "rebels" by the colonial government under the New Zealand Settlements Act 1863, removing their legal protections.
