What is nuclear fission

an atom splits into 2 or more smaller nuclei and produces heat (exothermic), then produces steam, which generates a turbine

What are the two types of nuclear fuel

Uranium, Plutonium

Pros & Cons of Nuclear Energy

  1. Pros – “sustainable” energy sources, no air pollutants if operated correctly, reduces carbon emissions, decreases dependence on foreign oil, water pollution is low, disruption of land is low to moderate

  2. Cons – risk of storing nuclear waste (Love Canal), waste takes millions of years to degrade, low net-enrgy yield, nuclear explosion/accident (Chernobyl, 1986)

Types of nuclear reactors

light-water reactors, heavy-water reactors, graphite-moderated reactors, exotic reactors

What is Nuclear Fusion?

extremely high temps are used to force nuclei together which releases large amounts of energy
