Instruction Permit
A permit allowing operation of a motor vehicle within Washington State while supervised by a licensed driver with at least five years of licensed driving experience sitting in the right-front passenger seat.
Intermediate Driver License
A driver license issued to individuals aged 16 or 17 that includes specific restrictions, such as nighttime driving limits and passenger restrictions, to ease them into driving responsibilities.
Enhanced Driver License (EDL)
A REAL ID-compliant Washington driver license valid for U.S. domestic air travel and land or sea border crossings into Canada and Mexico.
Facial Recognition System (FRS)
A system used by the Department of Licensing after a photo is taken to construct a unique digital template from facial features to prevent fraudulent activity.
Failure to Appear (FTA)
A notice issued when a driver fails to appear for, comply with, respond to, or pay a traffic infraction or criminal citation for a moving traffic offense.
Maria's Law
A 2005 Washington State law making it a crime to fail to properly secure a load, making it a gross misdemeanor if an unsecured load causes injury or death.
Dutch Reach
A safety method of opening a vehicle door using the hand farthest from the door, which forces the body to turn to look back for approaching bicyclists.
Reversible Lanes
Travel lanes marked by double-dashed yellow lines designed to carry traffic in one direction at certain times and in the opposite direction at other times.
Two-Way Left Turn Lanes
Shared center lanes marked by solid and dashed yellow lines reserved for left turns from either direction, which cannot be used for passing or traveling more than 300 feet.
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane
A reserved highway lane marked by a white diamond for vehicles carrying a specified minimum number of occupants.
Emergency Zone
The adjacent lanes of a roadway extending 200 feet before and after a stationary emergency vehicle displaying sirens or flashing lights, where traffic fines are doubled.
Hydroplaning
A dangerous condition on wet roads where vehicle tires ride up on water and lose all contact with the road, which can occur at speeds around 50 mph in heavy rain.
Four-Second Sight Distance Rule
A method used to determine if a driver is traveling too fast for conditions by counting four seconds from a stationary object ahead.
Implied Consent Law
A law stating that by operating a motor vehicle in Washington State, a driver agrees to submit to a breath test for alcohol content if requested by a police officer.
Ignition Interlock License (IIL)
A restricted driver license allowing an individual to drive vehicles equipped with an ignition interlock device while their driving privilege is suspended or revoked for a drug or alcohol-related offense.
Occupational/Restricted Driver License (ORL)
A restricted driver license allowing a person with a suspended or revoked license to drive for essential purposes like employment, education, court-ordered services, or medical care.
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)
The concentration of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream, measured by a breath or blood test.
