Lawful Arrest
Involves a series of steps required to legally detain an individual.
Purpose of Arrest
Designed to ensure appearance in court, prevent further crime, and allow for investigation.
Bail
A temporary release of the accused on monetary or other conditions.
Bail Hearing
A court proceeding where a judge decides whether to grant bail to the accused.
Resolution Discussion/Plea Bargain
Negotiation between the Crown and the accused for a guilty plea in exchange for a lighter sentence or reduced charges.
Trial Presentation Order
The Crown presents their case first in a trial to prove their claims.
Crown's Responsibility
The Crown must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Jury
A group of citizens selected to hear evidence and deliver a verdict in a trial.
Jury Selection Databases
Potential jurors are selected from provincial voters lists and health card databases.
Summons
A legal document ordering a person to appear for jury duty.
Jury Duty Requirements
Jurors must meet specific criteria, such as being a Canadian citizen, of legal age, and resident of the province.
Challenge for Cause
A reason to disqualify a potential juror due to bias or inability to be impartial; unlimited challenges are allowed.
Peremptory Challenge
Dismissal of a potential juror without needing to provide a reason; the number of challenges varies.
Sequestered
Isolated from outside contact during a trial to prevent influence on the jury's decision.

Focuses on rehabilitation, deterrence, and denunciation to punish offenders.
Sentencing Circle
A traditional Indigenous method of justice involving community members in the sentencing process.
