Alosetron
A medication used for IBS with diarrhea that works by increasing stool firmness and decreasing urgency; notably carries a black-box warning for constipation and ischemic colitis.
Lubiprostone
A medication used for IBS with constipation that works by increasing fluid secretion in the intestine and increasing intestinal motility.
Sulfasalazine
A GI anti-inflammatory medication used to treat Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and IBS by inhibiting prostaglandins synthesis to decrease colon inflammation.
Blood dyscrasias
Potential side effects of sulfasalazine that include anemia and agranulocytosis, necessitating the monitoring of CBC levels.
Agranulocytosis
A side effect of sulfasalazine characterized by a decrease in the number of granulocytes, which are a type of white blood cell.
Orange-yellow discoloration
A specific teaching point for patients taking sulfasalazine, as the medication may cause this change in the color of urine and/or skin.
Pancrelipase
An enzyme replacement medication used for pancreatic insufficiency to aid in the digestion of fat, carbohydrates, and protein; it must be taken immediately before or with meals and snacks.
Pancreatic insufficiency
A condition where the pancreas does not provide enough digestive enzymes to the intestine, often due to cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, or GI bypass surgery.
Ischemic colitis
A serious risk and complication associated with the IBS medication Alosetron, mentioned in its black-box warning.
