Psychology
The scientific study of behavior and mental processes and their underlying causes.
Scientific Method
Systematic process used to investigate claims about behavior, relying on observation, hypothesis testing, and evidence.

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this PSYC 101 course.
Gazzaniga (Psychological Science)
Primary textbook for the course: Psychological Science by Michael Gazzaniga (7th ed. used here).
Textbook Compatibility
The 6th edition can be compatible, but orders and materials may differ slightly.
Learning Outcomes
What students should be able to do after the course, including understanding perspectives, evaluating claims, and applying psychology to everyday issues.
SONA
System for recording participation in psychology research to earn course credits.
Option A (SONA credits)
Three research participation credits via SONA; at least 1 credit must be in-person; minimum age 18; credits earned per study time.
Option B (QUIZ credits)
Three in-person quizzes based on pre-selected articles; includes short-answer questions; 70/100 to receive credit; up to 5 extra credits for Chapter 14 quizzes.
Quizzes
Weekly quizzes (11 total, with the two lowest dropped); open-book; completed on Blackboard using lockdown browser; 15-minute limit.
Exams
Three exams (Exam 1, Exam 2, Final) consisting of multiple-choice questions; in-class, closed-book, not cumulative across exams.
Exam Weights
Each exam accounts for 25% of the final grade; quizzes account for 25% for a total of 100%.
Grading Scale
Letter grade ranges: A 89.5–100, B+ 84.5–89.4, B 79.5–84.4, C+ 74.5–79.4, C 69.5–74.4, D+ 64.5–69.4, D 59.5–64.4, F 0–59.4.
Extra Credit
Up to 5% of final grade from Blackboard pop-up activities; Chapter 14 quiz can yield up to 5 extra credits.
Lockdown Browser
Security software used for quizzes to prevent accessing notes or other resources; open-book format but time-limited.
Make-Up Policy
Make-ups allowed only with formal documentation approved by the Ombuds; two-week window for completing missed work; otherwise no make-ups.
Incomplete Grade
An 'I' may be assigned for serious circumstances, with time to complete coursework.
Cell Phone Etiquette
Cell phone use is discouraged in class; turned off during class and exams; may result in being asked to leave.
GenAI Policy
No use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for graded work; violations of academic honesty.
Academic Integrity
High standards of honesty; violations (cheating, plagiarism) referred to the Office of Academic Integrity; tied to Carolinian Creed.

Title IX
