What are Body Cavities

Spaces inside the body that protest separate the internal organ ← separates them into different groupings

What are cavities bordered by?

Bones, muscles, ligaments, and other structures

What is the Oral Cavity

Contains the tongue and teeth

What is the Nasal Cavity

Nose

What is the Orbital Cavities

Contains the eyeballs

What is the Middle Ear Cavities

Contains small bones (ossicles) in the ear

that transmit sound vibrations

What is the Synovial Cavities

• Found in freely movable

joints

• Contains synovial fluid

What is the dorsal cavity?

protest the nervous system by providing three different layers (known as the meninges)

How many subdivisons is the dorsal cavity divided into and what are they?

Two - Vertebral/Spinal Cavity + Cranial Cavity

What is the cranial cavity?

found within our skull ← where our brain can be found

What is the vertebral/spinal cavity

formed by the bones of the vertebral column and encases the spinal cord → each of the bones is called a vertebrae ← houses + encases the spinal cord

What is the ventral cavity?

houses the internal cavities (viscera [refers to all the internal organs]

What is one of the ventral cavity subdivisions divided by?

diaphragm

How many subdivisions are there and what are their names?

Two - Thoracic and Abdominopelvic cavity

What is the thoracic cavity

(top half) → forms the boundaries with ribs, muscles, sternum, + backbone

How many subdivisions in the thoracic cavity and what are their names?

3 - Pericardial cavity, Pleural, Mediastinum

What is the pericardial cavity?

Houses the heart

What is the pleural cavities

• houses the lungs (one cavity per lung) → contains a small amount of fluid within the cavity

What is the mediastinum?

•  cavity behind + superior to the pericardial cavity ←located between both lungs, behind (dorsal) the heart, and goes down to the diaphragm 

What is the abdominopelvic cavity?

→extends from the diaphragm to the groin ←encloses by the abdominal wall, bones, & the muscles of the pelvis (your stomach walls, vertebrae of your spine, + pelvis)

How many subdivisions does the abdominopelvic cavity have and what are their names?

2 - abdominal cavity + pelvic cavity

What is the abdominal cavity?

contains the viscera such as the stomach, large + small intestines, spleen, liver, and gallbladder → superior portion of the abdominopelvic

What is the pelvic cavity?

• lies within the pelvis ← contains the bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum (inferior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity + this is the rest of the viscera )

What is the serous membrane?

thin slipperly, double layer lining ← covers the organs of the thoracic + abdominal cavities + serves as a cushion that protects the viscera → surrounds the organs in the cavity

What are the layers of the serous membrane?

• parietal layer ←(lines the walls of the cavities) ← on top of the viscera layer

• visceral layer ← (covers and sticks [adheres] to the viscera [organs] in the cavity)

What is the serous membrane around the lungs?

Pleura

What is the serous membrane around the abdominal cavity that covers most of the viscera?

Peritoneum

What is the serous membrane that lines the thoracic cavity (the heart)

endocardium

What is the serous membrane that lines the heart?

Pericardium
