Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment in the body.
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body, including those that break down substances and those that build them up.
Cellular composition
The organization of cells as the basic units of life in all organisms.
Feedback loop
A mechanism by which a system regulates itself, either enhancing (positive feedback) or reducing (negative feedback) the initial stimulus.
Structural organization
The hierarchical arrangement of the body's structures—from chemical and cellular levels to tissues, organs, and systems.
Serous membranes
Thin sheets of tissue that line certain cavities within the body, providing lubrication for organs.
Anatomical position
The standard position of the body used as a reference point for anatomical terminology: standing upright, feet shoulder-width apart, arms at sides, palms facing forward.
Directional terms
Terms used to describe the locations of structures in the body relative to other structures.
