Observation
The act of watching species in their natural habitat and recording common species of plants and animals.
Quadrat Method
A method used in flat areas where a quadrat is placed randomly in the study area and the number of slow moving and stationary organisms are counted.
Line Transect
A method used for slopes and areas where one habitat changes to another, involving a piece of string placed in a straight line with marks at regular intervals to count slow moving or stationary organisms that touch the string.
Belt Transect
A method involving placing a piece of string of a certain length and then randomly throwing a quadrat along the length of the string to count the organisms in the quadrat.
Capture-Recapture
Involves catching a set number of organisms, tagging and releasing them, and then catching more organisms to record the number that was recaptured.
Calculating Population Size
Total population = (number captured 1st x number captured 2nd) ÷ number of tagged organisms that are recaptured
Calculating Species Frequency
(number of throws where the species is seen ÷ number of throws) X 100%
Calculating Species Density
Total number of organisms of a species ÷ number of quadrat throws (if the quadrat is 1m^2)
