Thrace
A region in southeastern Europe allied with Troy. Aeneas and his followers first land here after escaping Troy. However they soon discover that the king has betrayed them and murdered Polydorus.
Polydorus
A Trojan prince son of Priam who was sent to Thrace with gold for safekeeping. He was murdered by a king who coveted the gold. Aeneas encounters his spirit in the form of a bleeding tree.
Delos
A sacred island in the Aegean Sea known for its temple and oracle of Apollo. Aeneas and his followers visit here to seek guidance from the oracle.
Crete
A large island in the Mediterranean Sea south of Greece. Anchises initially believes the island is the promised land for the Trojans but they are driven away by a plague.
Cybele
The Phrygian mother goddess associated with fertility and nature. Her worship was prominent in Crete.
Cassandra
A Trojan prophetess daughter of Priam who was cursed by Apollo to have the gift of prophecy but never to be believed. She foretells the future of Aeneas and his descendants.
Hesperia
The ancient Greek name for Italy the land promised to Aeneas by the gods.
Oenotria
An ancient name for a region in southern Italy known for its wine production.
Caeleno
A Harpy a mythical creature with the body of a bird and the face of a woman. The Harpies attack the Trojans and curse them with hunger.
Actium
A promontory in western Greece where a major naval battle was fought later in Roman history. Aeneas and his followers pass by on their journey.
Chaonia
A region in northwestern Greece where Helenus a Trojan prince has established a new city.
Buthrotum
A city in Chaonia ruled by Helenus. Aeneas and his followers visit the city and receive prophecies from Helenus.
Andromache
The wife of Hector a Trojan hero killed in the Trojan War. After Troy's fall she was taken as a slave and eventually married Helenus.
Helenus
A Trojan prince son of Priam who had the gift of prophecy. He advises Aeneas on his journey to Italy.
Pyrrhus
Also known as Neoptolemus the son of Achilles. He was a Greek warrior who fought in the Trojan War and killed Priam.
Hermione
The daughter of Helen and Menelaus. She was married to Pyrrhus and later to Orestes.
Orestes
The son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. He killed his mother to avenge his father's death and was later pursued by the Furies.
30 suckling pigs
A sign given to Aeneas by Helenus indicating the place where he should found his new city in Italy.
Scylla and Charybdis
Two mythical sea monsters who lived in a narrow strait. One was a six-headed monster who devoured sailors and the other was a whirlpool that swallowed ships.
Polyphemus
A Cyclops a giant with one eye who lived in Sicily. He was blinded by Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey.
Achaemenides
A companion of Odysseus who was abandoned on the island of the Cyclops. He pleads with Aeneas to take him away.
Anchises
The father of Aeneas. He died before the fall of Troy and appears to Aeneas in a dream guiding him on his journey.
