Integers
Whole numbers that include negatives, zero, and positives (e.g., {…, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, …}).
Positive integer
An integer greater than zero (e.g., 3, 5).
Negative integer
An integer less than zero (e.g., -8, -21).
Zero
The integer at the center of the number line; neither positive nor negative.
Number line
A straight line with marks at evenly spaced intervals representing integers to visualize order and distance.
Writing integers from context
Converting real-world situations into signed integers by assigning a positive (gain/deposit) or negative (loss/deduction) sign.
Absolute value
The distance of a number from zero on the number line; always nonnegative; denoted by |x|.
Notation for absolute value
Use of vertical bars, as in |x|, to denote the absolute value of x.
|x| interpretation
Represents how far x is from zero, regardless of direction.
Greater than
A relation where one number is larger than another (written as a > b).
Less than
A relation where one number is smaller than another (written as a < b).
Ordering integers
Arranging integers from least to greatest (or greatest to least).
Distance on the number line
The absolute value of the difference between two numbers; measures how far apart they are.
Contextual signs (gains and losses)
Interpreting positive values as gains/deposits and negative values as losses/deductions in real-world contexts.
