what are biological factors? x6
factors relating to the body that impact health and wellbeing eg. genetics, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose regulation, birth weight
how does body weight link to cardiovascular disease?
excess weight adds strain on the heart leading to high blood pressure and hypertension, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease thus incidence of heart attack and stroke
how does body weight link to osteoarthritis?
excess weight places greater strain on the joints contributing to the cartilage being worn down, increasing prevalence of osteoarthritis
how does blood pressure link to cardiovascular disease?
high blood pressure means there is increased pressure on artery walls as the heart contracts and relaxes due to the heart working harder, causing added strain and risk of cardiovascular disease
how does blood cholesterol link to cardiovascular disease?
when LDL cholesterol is deposited on artery walls it causes atherosclerosis, increasing the incidence of cardiovascular disease
how does glucose regulation link to type 2 diabetes?
if blood glucose levels are consistently high, insulin levels remain high causing cells to become resistant to insulin, increasing the incidence of type 2 diabetes
hoe does genetics link to development of different diseases?
males and females produce different proportions of hormones and have different body structures which influence the prevalence of different diseases between populations
how does low birth weight link to infection and disease?
it often indicates an underdeveloped immune system increasing the risk of infection and disease during infancy
