Base
A substance that increases the number of hydroxide (OH-) ion in a solution when dissolved in water. Bases are pH 7.1 to 14 on the pH scale.

Acid
A substance that increases the number of hydrogen (H+) ion in a solution when dissolved in water. Acids are pH 0 to 6.9 on the pH scale.

pH
potential of hydrogen

Neutralization
The reaction of an acid and a base to form a neutral solution of water and a salt. pH = 7

pH scale
A scale that measures from 0 to 14 used to measure the pH of a solution. Acids are pH 0 to 6.9 and bases are pH 7.1 to 14.

Indicator
A compound that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base

Litmus paper
an indicator paper that turns red in an acid and blue in a base

Neutral pH
A substance with a pH = 7. Example: Pure water, salt solution

Salt
An ionic compound made from the neutralization of an acid with a base.
Hydrogen ion
A positively charged ion (H+) formed from a hydrogen atom that has lost its electron

Hydroxide ion
A negatively charged ion made of oxygen and hydrogen (OH-)
