Pronoun
A word used to stand for (or take the place of) a noun.
Antecedent
A word for which a pronoun stands; derived from 'ante' meaning 'before'.
Singular Pronoun
A pronoun that replaces a singular noun.
Plural Pronoun
A pronoun that replaces a plural noun.
Indefinite Pronoun
A pronoun that does not refer to a specific person or thing; examples include 'some', 'any', 'none', 'all', 'most'.
Compound Subjects
Subjects that are joined by 'and', which require a plural referent.
Agreement in Number
A rule stating that the pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number (singular/plural).
Gender in Pronouns
The gender of the pronoun—masculine, feminine, or neuter—must agree with the gender of its antecedent.
Compound Subjects with Or/Nor
In compound subjects joined by 'or' or 'nor', the pronoun agrees with the antecedent closer to the pronoun.
