Brothers- B
basis of comparison- needs to be comparing one measure against another
Brothers- R
replication- needs to have multiple trials
Brothers- O
operational definitions- define all the variables & parts of a study- has to be measurable, not up to interpretation
Brothers- T
technique- what type of study
Brothers- H
hypotheses matches conclusion- must be the only thing you address in your conclusion
Brothers- E
ethics
Brothers- R
random sampling
Brothers- S
standardization of procedure
Types- tests
intellectual (achievement & aptitude) and personality (projective & objective) tests- create basis of comparison, difficult to create good tests due to cultural bias- can facilitate dangerous conclusions
Types- experimental method
gold standard of research, harder to create since you need to control all the variables; creates a control group, if then because, and independent & dependent variables
Types- correlational method
looking for a relationship between 2 things, not necessarily a cause & effect, no control group or causation, just noticing trends
Types- naturalistic observation
observes subject in natural environment w/o interference- gives insight into real-world behaviors & interactions
Types- case study
in-depth analysis of a group, event, or person- gets lots of info but little data, can’t apply findings to the masses
Types- surveys & questionnaires
gets lots of data fast, self response can create inaccurate results- need to be very careful how you word questions/instructions, huge risk of response bias
Types- longitudinal studies
repeated observations of same subjects over an extended period, can see developmental changes & shifts, many participants drop out
Types- cross-sectional studies
instead of studying 1 group over time- gets multiple groups encapsulating that in a shorter period of time, diverse groups of participants
Types- twin studies
looks into nature vs nurture since they share DNA and upbringing
Types- meta-analysis
combines results of multiple studies & analyzes their data, looks for trends
