Scientific Method
A systematic process used for scientific investigation, involving observation, hypothesis formulation, experimentation, and conclusion.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment to test its effects on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured in an experiment; it is affected by changes in the independent variable.
Control Group
A group in an experiment that does not receive the experimental treatment and is used for comparison.
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for a phenomenon, forming the basis for further investigation.
Replication
Repetition of experiments to ensure results are consistent and reliable.
Metric System
A decimal-based system of measurement used internationally, standardizing units for length, mass, volume, and temperature.
Macromolecules
Large biological molecules essential for life, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids.
Positive Control
An experiment or trial that uses a treatment known to produce results for comparison's sake.
Negative Control
An experiment that uses a group not exposed to the treatment to show that results are due to the treatment.
Meniscus
The curve seen at the surface of a liquid in a container, significant for accurate measurement.
Field of View
The extent of the observable world that can be seen through a microscope at a given magnification.
Enzyme
A biological macromolecule that speeds up chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy.
Activation Energy
The minimum energy required for a chemical reaction to occur.
Zygote
The fertilized egg that results from the union of sperm and egg cells.
Karyotype
A visual representation of an individual's complete set of chromosomes, used to detect genetic disorders.
Haploid
A cell that contains one complete set of chromosomes (n), characteristic of gametes.
Diploid
A cell that contains two complete sets of chromosomes (2n), typical of somatic cells.
