Compromise of 1850

passed the Fugitive Slave Act , banning slave trade in DC, admitting California as a free state, splitting up the Texas territory, and instating popular sovereignty in the Mexican Cession

Issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862 it declared that all slaves in the Confederate States would be free. Happy day for the slaves. It took the 13th amendment to abolish slavery in the US.

Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The most violent battle of the American Civil War fought from July 1 - July 3, 1863. Robert E. Lee ordered Gen. Pickett to attack the middle of the Union army. ( Pickett's Charge ) Lee's army lost 28,000 men. The South would never invade the North again.

Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi

Ulysses S. Grants best fought campaign surrounding the city until it ran out of food and supplies. Vicksburg had to surrender - yielding command of the Mississippi River to the Union and splitting the South in two. The North now controlled the important Mississippi River.

Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

The Virginia town where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9th, 1865, ending the Civil War. Lee realized the south could not fight any longer. He sent Ulysses S. Grant a message saying the Confederacy was ready to surrender. Grant let confed. soldiers return home & gave the starving soldiers supplies.

April 14, 1865, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater while watching "My American Cousin"/ with his death, all hope of the South coming back easily into the Union ended
