Negative Freedom
Freedom defined strictly as the absence of external restraint.
Authentic Freedom

Blind Impulse
The opposite of the deliberate, rational action required for true freedom.
Intellect
Acts as the headlight that illuminates the road by discerning truth and the good; one of the two supreme faculties of the soul.

The appetite for the good, which requires the intellect to present that good first.
St. Thomas Aquinas
Theologian who posits that freedom is an intrinsic property of the whole human being.
Humility
Allows the intellect to perceive reality as it is, enabling true freedom.
Pride
An internal barrier that creates self-deception, which clouds the intellect and obscures objective truth.
Internal Barriers
Psychological or spiritual obstacles, such as pride.
External Constraints
Outer obstacles like poverty that limit options but cannot destroy inner freedom unless a person surrenders agency.

Refers to accountability and responsibility, not absolute license.
Responsibility
Bearing the weight of the outcomes generated by one's choices.
