discordance: when within a certain melody, a note stands out which does not fit the melody
cacophony: multiple sounds all at once
major (lighter/higher) and minor (deeper) chord: major chords may connote positive feelings or an impending climax. both may produce anticipation, tension or an unnerving feeling.
Non-diagetic
only heard by view; soundtrack, voiceover
Diagetic
sound that can be heard by characters and viewer
Character theme
theme that is often heard as a character enters/exists, eg; Darth Vader’s theme.
Aural motif
Sound, or short melody often heard when a character is mentioned, easily recognisable and easily associated eg; Darth Vader’s breathing
Contrapuntal sound
sound that contradicts what the viewer sees on the screen eg; in horror films they often use nursery rhymes
Foley sound
sound added in production after filming; footsteps, knocking
Ambient sound
sound added in post-production to increase the viewer’s immersion; birds, cars, people talking
sound bridge
sound which transfers from one scene to the other; this creates a connection between the two scenes
J-cut
sound which can be heard before the scene is shown; this offers sense of anticipation, and foreshadowing. opposite is L-cut
Amplified sound
a particular sound that is amplified/louder.
