What are the two main divisions of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What does the Central Nervous System (CNS) include?
Brain and spinal cord; integrative control center
What is the role of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
Communication between CNS and body via cranial and spinal nerves
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
Sensory (Afferent) Division and Motor (Efferent) Division
What is the function of the Sensory (Afferent) Division?
Conducts signals from receptors to the CNS using sensory neurons
What is the function of the Motor (Efferent) Division?
Conducts signals from the CNS to effectors using motor neurons
What are the two branches of the Motor (Efferent) Division?
Autonomic Nervous System and Somatic Nervous System
What does the Autonomic Nervous System control?
Involuntary responses
Examples: Heartbeat, digestion, pupil dilation, respiratory rate.
What does the Somatic Nervous System control?
Voluntary movement
Examples: Walking, writing, lifting a cup, throwing a ball.
What are the two divisions of the Autonomic Nervous System?
Sympathetic Division and Parasympathetic Division
What is the role of the Sympathetic Division?
Mobilizes body systems; "fight or flight" responses
What is the role of the Parasympathetic Division?
Conserves energy; "rest and digest" responses
