Sociology of Gender Lecture Notes

Sex

The chromosomal, chemical, and anatomical organization of human bodies that determines biological maleness or femaleness.

Gender

The meanings attached to the anatomical differences between men and women, often viewed as a social construction.

Cisnormativity

A cultural and societal bias that privileges cisgender identities and gender norms, while ignoring or underrepresenting trans identities.

Differences of Sex Development (DSD)

An umbrella term describing individuals with anatomical, hormonal, and/or chromosomal characteristics associated with multiple reproductive roles.

Intersex

A term for people with differences of sex development; refers to individuals who may have a mix of male and female anatomical characteristics.

Gender Identity

Someone's deeply felt sense of their own gender, which can differ from the sex assigned at birth.

Cisgender

A term for individuals whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.

Trans

An umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

Gender Roles

Cultural sets of behavioral expectations assigned to individuals based on their perceived sex.

Gender Expression

Someone's outer appearance in public, including clothing, hairstyle, and mannerisms.
