Pattern
A regularity in the world, in human-made design, or in abstract ideas where elements repeat in a predictable and logical manner, or anything that is not random.
Geometric Pattern
A type of pattern formed of repeating geometric shapes that is typically repeated like a wallpaper design.
Symmetry
A property where different sides of something are alike, forming reflections across two sides (mirror image), several sides, or all sides.
Fractals
Self-similar, 'never-ending' patterns that repeat indefinitely as the pattern is iterated on an infinitely smaller scale.
Spirals
Geometric patterns that curve outward or inward around a central point.
Logarithmic Spiral
A special type of spiral that gets smaller as it goes, observed in natural phenomena such as hurricanes, galaxies, and certain seashells.
Fibonacci Sequence
A numerical sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, \rdots) where each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers.
Tessellation
A pattern of geometric shapes that fit together perfectly on a plane without any gaps or overlaps and can repeat infinitely in all directions.

Language
A complex system of words and symbols, either spoken or written, used by a particular community as a means of communication.
Characteristics of Mathematical Language
The three core attributes of the language of mathematics: precise (able to make fine distinctions), concise (able to say things briefly), and powerful (able to express complex thoughts easily).
Mathematical Expression
The mathematical analog of an English noun; a correct arrangement of mathematical symbols used to represent an object of interest without stating a complete thought.
Mathematical Sentence
The mathematical analog of an English sentence; a correct arrangement of mathematical symbols that states a complete thought and can be true, false, or conditionally true.
Set
A collection of mathematical objects (termed elements), such as numbers, points in space, or other sets, denoted using braces {} and element membership symbol ∈.
Function
A mathematical transformation that takes a mathematical object and transforms it into another object.
Relation
A mathematical concept that behaves like an adjective or preposition, referring to a property or potential relationship between objects (such as < or =).
Logical Connective
A symbol or word (also called a logical operator) used to connect two or more sentences in logic.
Negation
A logical operation representing the opposite of a statement, usually employing the word 'not' and symbolized by ∼.
Conjunction
A compound statement formed by joining two simple sentences with the word 'and', symbolized as p∧q.
Disjunction
A compound statement formed by joining two simple sentences with the word 'or', symbolized as p∨q.
Implication
A logical relationship where if a premise statement p is true, then the conclusion statement q must also be true, symbolized as p⇒q.
Applications of Mathematics in Technology
The implementation of math and statistics in modern technology including GPS navigation, weather prediction, public key cryptography, computer circuits, search engines, and speech recognition.
Applications of Mathematics in Engineering
The core use of math to design components, model real-life situations, perform surveying, and construct structures such as bridges, roller coasters, robotics, and satellites.
Applications of Mathematics in Medicine and Health
The use of mathematical models and statistics in devices like MRI and tomography, medical research, epidemic analysis, population dynamics, and pharmacy.
Applications of Mathematics in Finance and Business
The application of business math to oversee finances, supply chains, banking, fraud detection, pricing strategies, big data, and game theory.
