Scientific observation
A process of observing and recording behaviours in a structured way without interacting/interfering/influencing the people involved
Natural observation
Observing people in real environments
Authentic behaviour
Less control, behviour is unpredictable
Contrived observation
Observing people in a set-up environment
Controlled setting, easier to replicate
Response bias, higher cost, my not reflect real life
Disguised observation
The people being observed dont know the observer (stays hidden) sometimes they dont even know theyre being watched at all
Prevents participants to change their behaviours (make more raw)
Undisguised observation
The people being observed know that they are part of a study and see the observer
Provides more transparency and is more ethical
Human observation
A researcher or employee watches people or events
Mechanical observation
A device or technology does the observing
Ex: gps, eye tracking, facial action coding system, cookie ids, google analytics
