Sex
A set of biological attributes associated with physical and physiological features including chromosomes, gene expression, hormone levels, and reproductive anatomy.
Gender
Socially constructed roles, behaviours, expressions, and identities that influence how people perceive themselves and others and how power is distributed in society.
Karyotype
The chromosomal complement of an individual, typically including sex chromosomes of either XX (female) or XY (male).
Intersex
A naturally occurring variation in humans where external genitalia may appear ambiguous or "opposite" to the expected appearance based on the individual's chromosomal karyotype.
Gender Identity
How individuals see themselves as masculine, feminine, or something in between, affecting their feelings and behaviours along a non-static continuum.
Gender Roles
The collection of values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours shaped by societal norms that are considered masculine or feminine.
Theory of Gender Neutrality
The claim that biological sex does not determining gender identity and that social, psychological, and intellectual factors can override biology.
Transgender
An umbrella term for individuals whose behaviours or identities differ from traditional gender roles associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Genderqueer
A term for people who identify their gender as falling outside the binary constructs of "male" and "female."
Transitioning
The process of changing one's appearance and how others perceive them to align with the gender they feel on the inside.
Dead Name
The name used for a person before they transitioned; often used by institutions when legal name changes are financially inaccessible (137.00 in Ontario).
Phalloplasty
A medical transition procedure for trans men involving the construction of a penis using skin from other parts of the body.
Metoidioplasty
A surgery for trans men that allows the clitoris to function more like a penis in conjunction with hormone treatments.
Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty
A medical transition procedure for trans women involving the creation of a vagina by inverting penile skin.
Gender Affirming Health Care
An approach that affirms a person's gender identity rather than attempting to change it, endorsed by the Canadian Psychological Association.
Puberty Blockers
Medications used to delay the development of secondary sex characteristics to give adolescents time to decide on their transition; the effects are not permanent.
Mature Minors
Children deemed capable of making their own medical decisions and providing informed consent regarding gender-affirming care.
Sexual Minority
A term referring to cisgender or transgender persons who identify as homosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, two-spirit, or asexual.
Pansexuality
An enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attraction to any or all sexes and genders.
Asexuality
A lack of sexual orientation, attraction, or interest overall.
Conversion Therapy
Discredited and harmful practices that seek to change a person's sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Telic Congruence
Living consistently within one’s own valuative goals or religious values.
Positive Meaning Making
An active process where individuals revise or reappraise events to resolve issues arising from crisis or loss to rebuild self-worth.
The Health Gap (Men)
The phenomenon where men have increased risks of suicide and substance use disorders while having lower rates of health service utilization.
The Justice Gap (Men)
The trend where men, particularly Black and Indigenous men, receive longer sentences than women for the same crimes.
Traditional Masculinity Ideology
A set of norms suggesting men should avoid femininity ("no sissy stuff"), be respected for success ("the big wheel"), never show weakness ("the sturdy oak"), and seek risk ("give ’em hell").
Gender Role Conflict
A psychological state where socialized gender roles have negative consequences for the person or others, associated with depression, anger, and poor coping.
Gender Role Strain
Cognitive stress arising from contradictory, inconsistent, or dysfunctional expectations associated with the male gender role.
Restrictive Emotionality
A masculine norm where emotional expression (except anger and rage) is viewed as feminine or a limitation on rationality.
Drapetomania
A historical, racist pathologization described by Samuel Cartwright as a "disease" causing enslaved people to run away.
Dysaesthesia Ethiopica
A nineteenth-century racist diagnosis used to characterize Black people as submissive and needing white direction.
The Gate House
An organization that utilizes peer support to offer services specifically to men and boys who have experienced sexual abuse.
