What is a Marine Casualty?
Any casualty or accident involving any vessel other than a public vessel upon a navigable waterway, involving any U.S. vessel, foreign tank vessel on U.S. waters involving significant harm to the environment or material damage affecting the seaworthiness of the vessel. 46CFR4.03-1
When should you notify someone of a Marine Casualty?
Immediately after the addressing of resultant safety concerns the owner or person in charge, shall notify the nearest sector office, marine inspection office, or coast guard office 46CFR4.05-1
What is considered a significant harm to the environment?
a discharge or probable discharge of oil or hazardous substance in a harmful or reportable quantity. Exceptions apply to vessels more than 12nm offshore per 33CFR151.10 and 151.13
Report of Marine Casualty
when the owner or person in charge, within 5 days, files a written report required to be reported under 4.05-1.
