What is the hypothosis of Stratford field work?

regeneration in Stratford has had a positive effect on the human and physical environment

2
New cards

What is the location of Stratford?

located in north-east London in south-east England
covers 4 London boroughs - Newham - Tower hamlets - Hackney - Waltham forest

3
New cards

Why is Stratford a good location?

regeneration occured recently to host the Olympics and so is ideal location to see what improvements this had made - close to our school meaning we could carry out needed collection within a day - area has highest deprivation in London

4
New cards

What were the risks?

becoming seperated from the group - given panic cards to get back to group - never in groups less than 3 - get off at next stop
crossing roads - only cross at zebra crossings and when told by member of staff
using public transport at busy times - did not stand too close to edge of platforms - stayed on same carriage as members of staff - panic cards

5
New cards

What is method of data collection 1?

annotated photos - using photos before the regeneration was a way to identify features (human + physical) of an area before improvements occured to allow us to see if development has changed area in positive way
Howether photos have features that may not be visable that could effect scores eg roads or litter

6
New cards

What is method of data collection 2?

environmental quality survey - allowed us to see if regeneration has had positive effects physical environement we scored 4 locations within the regeneration area and 1 location outside area - we used random sampling of a random number generator to choose the 4 areas
Howether we could not complete overall before regeneration we could not compare overall score to see if there has been improvements

7
New cards

Evalution - What are the problems of photographs?

bias as photographer can choose what is included in picture as many show the worst of area
secondary data as cannot take photos before regeneration so we do not know if photos are true representation of are

8
New cards

Evalution - What are the improvments of photographs?

as may be bias we need to use more photographs before regeneration which would ensure a more accurate view of the area
also take ‘after’ photopgraphs ourselves to give better representation of the area

9
New cards

Evaluation - What are the problems of EQS?

opinion based + sujective so diffrent people will have different views about regeneration
only had time to evalute 5 areas
only taken after regeneration don’t have EQS of area before so can’t prove regeneration

10
New cards

Evalution - What are the improvments of EQS?

we need to go to all 9 locations to get more accurate view of whole area
could have EQS before regeneration to see if area has actually changed

11
New cards

How is our data presented?

radar graph - data plotted as points that are all joined up - larger the polygon=better environmental survey - more rounded=more consistent

12
New cards

Why did we use radar graphs?

good visual representation so easy to see patterns
easy to compare multiple locations on one graph
easy to identify anomalies

13
New cards

What are some problems with radar graphs?

could become crowed if too many sites plotted which could lead to invalid conclusions
no spatial element so difficult to see if geographical pattern fo results we collected

14
New cards

What conclusions can be drawn by bi-polar surveys?

showed 4 locations inside regeneration zone had high scores shows good environmental quality with low levels of noice + abundance of trees
1 location we visited outside regeneration and scored very low which further showed regeneration has improved targeted areas
so overall I can infer that regeneration has had a positive effect on physical and human environment

15
New cards

What conclusion can be drawn by annotated photographys?

photographs show significant improvements to the sites - all after photos showed mostly positive annotations compared to before photos which were mostly negative
eg - fridge mountain now site of WHUFC
waste ground of tyres now aquatic centre
so overall I can infer that regeneration has had a positive effect on physical and human environment
