Systems Thinking
Habits and practices used to analyze complex issues at a dynamic structural level.
Stock
A reservoir or pool in system dynamics that stores mass, energy, or information, possesses inertia or memory, and persists if time is hypothetically frozen.
Flow
The rate of movement of material, energy, or information between stocks per unit of time.
Information Deficit Model
The assumption that providing more scientific information or increasing public literacy automatically drives action or closes climate belief gaps.
Dual-Process Theory
A psychological framework describing the conflict between rational/analytic processing (logical, abstract) and emotional/affective processing (intuitive, vivid), where affective processing typically dominates decision-making.
Pluralistic Ignorance
A perceptual bias occurring when individuals privately support climate action or hold concern but falsely assume that the majority of others do not share their view.
False Consensus Effect
A perceptual bias wherein individuals overestimate how widely shared their own personal beliefs or opinions are.
Agency Frame (A-Frame)
A mitigation framework that reconciles individual (i-frame) and structural (s-frame) approaches by targeting role-based agency across five key spheres: citizens, professionals, investors, consumers, and role models.
Blackbody
An idealized physical surface that absorbs and emits 100% of incident radiation strictly as a function of absolute temperature T in Kelvin.
Wien's Displacement Law
A radiation law stating that peak emission wavelength λmax is inversely proportional to absolute temperature T, defined as λmax=T2897μm.
Stefan-Boltzmann Law
A physical law stating that total radiative energy flux E emitted per unit area scales with the fourth power of absolute temperature, E=σ⋅A⋅T4, where σ=5.67×10−8W/m2K4.
Albedo
The fraction of incoming solar radiation reflected back into space by a surface or planet, measured as approximately 0.30\text{--}0.31 for Earth.
Territorial Emissions
A greenhouse gas accounting framework that measures emissions produced strictly within a country's geographical borders.
Consumption-Based Emissions
An emissions accounting framework calculated by subtracting embodied carbon in exported goods from territorial emissions and adding embodied carbon in imported goods.
Airborne Fraction
The proportion of total annual anthropogenic CO2 emissions that remains accumulated in the atmosphere, currently approximately 45%.
Ecological Overshoot
A state in which human resource consumption and waste generation exceed the regenerative and absorptive capacity of Earth's ecosystems.
Clausius-Clapeyron Relation
A thermodynamic relation dictating that atmospheric moisture-holding capacity increases by approximately 7% for every 1∘C increase in temperature.
Silicate Weathering
A natural long-term geological sink process where atmospheric CO2 reacts with silicate rocks according to CaSiO3+2CO2+H2O→CaCO3+SiO2+CO2+H2O.
Transient Climate Response to Cumulative Carbon Emissions (TCRE)
The near-linear relationship between cumulative total anthropogenic CO2 emissions and global mean surface temperature increase.
Kaya Identity
An identity expressing total CO2 emissions as the product of Population, GDP per capita, Energy Intensity of GDP, and Carbon Intensity of Energy.
