Bladder training
development of the use of the muscles of the perineum to improve voluntary control over voiding.
Catheterization
introduction of a rubber or plastic tube through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine.
Colostomy
a surgical creation of an opening between the colon and the surface of the body to be used for the passage of stool.
Defecation
elimination of fecal matter from the digestive system through the rectum
(bowel movement)
Dumping syndrome
combination of profuse perspiration, nausea, vertigo, and weakness experienced by patients who have had a subtotal gastrectomy

Enema
a solution injected or to be injected into the rectum for therapeutic or cleansing purposes.
Fecal impaction
the presence of stool that is obstructive and not passed without intervention to relieve it.
Flatulence
excess formation of gases in the stomach or intestine (farting)
Ileostomy
the placement of the end of the small intestine through an opening in the abdominal wall, creating a stoma for waste elimination.
Incontinence
the inability to control excretory functions, such as urination or defecation, often leading to involuntary loss of urine or stool.
Irrigation
a cleansing by a stream of water or other fluid used to remove debris or waste from a body cavity.
Nasogastric (NG) tube
a pliable tube that is inserted through the patient’s nasopharynx and into the stomach
used for various purposes, including feeding, medication administration, and gastric decompression.
Ostomy
a surgical opening in the body that connects an internal organ to the outside, allowing for the drainage of bodily fluids or waste.
Urinary catheter
A hollow, flexible tube that can be inserted into the bladder through the meatus and urethra to withdraw urine or instill medication or an irrigant.
Urostomy
An opening through the skin created to provide an outlet for urinary elimination
