Anion
Ions with a negative charge, meaning they have more electrons than protons.
Cation
Ions with a positive charge, meaning they have more protons than electrons.
Principal quantum number
The highest level quantum number, noted as n=value.
Nonmetals
Elements located above and to the right of a diagonal line on the periodic table that typically accept electrons to form anions.
Metals
Elements located to the left or underneath a diagonal line on the periodic table that typically lose electrons to form cations.
Isoelectronic
Having the same electronic configuration.
Ionic Bond
The electrostatic attraction of a positively charged species to a negatively charged species.
Metallic Bond
Pertaining to a series of atoms that have a tenuous grasp on electrons, to which those electrons can freely move around in a lattice like structure.
Ductile
The ability for metal to be drawn out into a string without breaking its metallic bonds.
