Dred Scott
A slave from Missouri who began a lawsuit concerning his freedom in a freestate after his owner died,

1. Believed slavery was a moral, social and political wrong and should not be spread
2. Believed slavery was based on greed not inefficiency of the labor system
3. Legislation was needed to outlaw it in the territories

John Brown
Raid against slave holders. Failed at Harpers Ferry. Plan was to take weapons and distribute them to slaves. Slaves with weapons would start an internal rebellion vs. slave owners

Election of 1860
Presidential election that ended with Abraham Lincoln as president, southern states began to secede forming the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as their president.
Roger Taney & Dred Scott Decision
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney delivered the majority opinion in the case; he ruled against Scott because, he claimed, African Americans were not citizens and therefore could not sue in the courts

1858 Senate Debate, Lincoln forced Douglas to debate issue of slavery, Douglas supported pop-sovereignty, Lincoln asserted that slavery should not spread to territories, Lincoln emerged as strong Republican candidate
John Brown Hanging
December 2, 1859. Brown was hanged for high treason. Northerners expressed admiration for Brown. Southerners were terrified of him and were glad to be rid of him.
