limited atonement
means salvationwas limited and available only to certain individuals ; i.e. the elect
unlimited atonement
means salvation was unlimited and available to all who would accept it
total depravity
means that nothing man can do will merit any favor or consideration from God as far as salvation is concerned; it does not mean that people cannot or do not perform actions that are good in man’s and God’s sight, nor does it mean that sinful man has no conscience to judge between good and evil for himself, nor that people indulge in every form of sin, nor even in any particular sin to the greatest extent possible. But it does mean that because man’s entire being has been corrupted he can never do anything that would merit saving favor with God.
justification
past, judicial act of God where, because of the work of christ, the believer is declared to be just or righteous before God. it is the “…legal imputation of the righteousness of Christ to the believing sinner.” This is the beginning stage of our salvation.
sanctification
is the present, continual process of setting one apart and conforming the believer more and more to the image of christ. this is where the believer lives out his/her faith every day in everyday situations. this is the continuing stage of our salvation.
glorification
the future, consummating act of our salvation where we will live in heaven and be free from the presence and power of sin. this is the completion stage of our salvation.
substitutionary atonement
(also called vicarious atonement) means Jesus suffered and died as a substitute for sinful humanity
propitiation
(appeasing the wrath of God) means Jesus suffered God’s wrath against sin on behalf of believer
vicarious atonement
different name for substitutionary atonement; Jesus suffered and died as a substitute for sinful humanity
redemption
(meaning liberation {because of a payment made} or buying back) means Jesus paid the price in order to buy us back from the ramifications of sin
reconciliation
(a change of relationship from hostility to peace between two parties) means Jesus’ death on the cross has reconciled or restored the right relationship between sinful man and holy God.
imputed righteousness
the “…legal imputation of the righteousness of Christ to the believing sinner.”
practical righteousness
living it out
