Tort Law
A body of law that addresses and provides remedies for civil wrongs not arising out of contractual obligations.
Intentional Torts
Torts where the wrongdoer acted with intent to cause harm.
Negligent Torts
Torts resulting from negligence, where someone fails to exercise reasonable care.
Strict Liability Torts
Torts involving liability without fault, often applied to inherently dangerous activities.
Compensatory Damages
Damages intended to compensate the plaintiff for losses suffered.
Punitive Damages
Damages intended to punish the defendant for egregious conduct and deter future wrongdoing.
Void for Vagueness
A legal principle that invalidates laws that are so unclear that a reasonable person cannot understand what conduct is prohibited.
Pretextual Stop/Investigatory Stop
A stop made by law enforcement where the stated reason for the stop is not the real reason.
Status Crimes
Crimes based on a person's condition or characteristic, rather than their conduct.
