What is diffusion?
It is the net movement of particles from a high concentration to a lower concentration
What are uses of diffusion in living organism?
They get many substances via diffusion, used to get wid of waste, used in gas exchange in plants and animals.
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water between concentration gradients from a high to low gradient through a cieis partially permeable membrane
What happens with animal cells and osmosis?
If an animal cell is placed in pure water, water enters the cell via osmosis and the cell swells and bursts because the cell membrane can’t support
What happens in osmosis in plant cells?
Plant cells have cell walls, if a plant cell is in pure water , water will enter that cell via osmosis and the cytoplasm and vacuole will swell.
if a plant cell is placed in a solution that is more concentrated that the cytoplasm, water leaves the cell and the cytoplasm and vacuole shrunk, the cytoplasm then pulls from the cell wall, this pulls the cell membrane away from the cell wall too.
What is the potato strip method for osmosis experiments?
Measure potato strip length then put potato strips in water, then remove 2 min later and measure the change in length
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration, against the concentration gradient. The energy to do this is created in the mitochondria
