Shield Volcano
A broad, gently sloping type of volcano that is the largest in size, built from many thin flows of basaltic lava with low silica and low viscosity.
Cinder (Scoria) Cone
A small, steep-sided, short-lived volcano built almost entirely from loose volcanic fragments called scoria or cinders, formed by explosive bursts of lava.
Composite Volcano (Stratovolcano)
A tall, steep, cone-shaped volcano built from alternating layers of lava flows and pyroclastic material resulting from repeated explosive and quiet eruptions.
Hawaiian Eruption
The lowest intensity eruptive style characterized by gentle, non-explosive, fluid basaltic lava, lava fountains, and long lava flows with little ash.
Strombolian Eruption
A low to moderate intensity eruption style featuring small explosions of bursting gas bubbles that throw blobs of molten lava, cinders, and bombs into the air.
Vulcanian Eruption
A high intensity eruptive style characterized by short, violent explosions, thick ash clouds, dense volcanic ash, blocks, bombs, and pyroclastic material.
Canary Islands Plate Setting
A volcanic region believed to be formed by a mantle hot spot (mantle plume) rather than a plate boundary.
2021 La Palma Eruption
A significant eruption on La Palma that lasted about 50 years after the previous one, destroying thousands of homes and creating new land by entering the ocean.
Laacher See
A volcanic lake in Germany formed from the remains of a large caldera after a massive explosive eruption emptied a magma chamber and caused the roof to collapse.
Maar
A broad, shallow volcanic crater, often water-filled, produced by hydrovolcanic or phreatomagmatic explosions.
Hydrovolcanism
Volcanic activity occurring when magma contacts groundwater or surface water, causing water to instantly flash to steam and expand explosively.
Fuel-coolant Interaction
A process where hot magma (fuel) meets water (coolant), causing rapid steam expansion and violent explosions that create maars.
Stromboli
A stratovolcano on a convergent boundary known for continuous eruptions and referred to as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean."
Mt. Etna
Europe's largest active volcano, categorized as a stratovolcano located at a convergent plate setting.
Mt. Vesuvius
A stratovolcano known for the Plinian eruption that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Santorini
A caldera located at a convergent boundary associated with the Minoan eruption and the legend of Atlantis.
Eyjafjallajökull
A stratovolcano in Iceland that caused significant disruption to global air travel in the year 2010.
Laki
A fissure volcano in Iceland whose 1783 eruption caused widespread climate effects and famine.
Tavurvur Volcano
A volcano located in Papua New Guinea used in the lecture to illustrate a Vulcanian eruption style.
Parícutin
A well-known example of a Cinder (Scoria) Cone volcano located in Mexico.
