Why is the lymphatic system not very popular compared to other systems?
The problems related to the system are hard to detect, works quietly in the background (no major organs), doesn’t have any dramatic conditions
Explain each of the three functions
Return excess fluid (lymph) to circulatory system, transport majority of lipids from digestive system, produce/circulate lymphocytes and aid the immune system
How much plasma is NOT returned to the blood vessels and is picked up by the lymphatic vessels?
10-15%
How does the lymph eventually rejoin the circulatory system?
Lymphatic vessels drain into two thoracic veins that will lead to the heart
How is lymph moved if there is no pump to power the movement?
smooth and skeletal muscles
What are some differences between blood and lymphatic vessels?
Lymphatic vessels have thin walls, have valves, larger than capillaries
Where are villi found?
small intestine
Both the blood and lymphatic vessels are in the villi. What is the name of the lymphatic vessel in the villi?
Lacteal
What nutrient does this lymphatic vessel absorb and carry?
lipids
What major vein and organ does the lymphatic system bypass?
portal vein and liver
What do you pick between fat-based toxin or protein-based toxin?
Fat-based toxin because it is faster and easier to break down since it goes through the liver unlike protein-based toxin
What is lymphadenopathy?
Enlarged lymph nodes usually due to infection/inflammation
what is lymphedema? what can cause this?
excessive fluid, called lymph, collects in tissues causing swelling, caused by medications, liver failure, salt, pregnancy
Tonsils and adenoids
lymphocytes reside here
lymph nodes
lymphocytes and other immune cells circulate and reside
appendix
lymphocytes reside here
bone marrow
lymphocytes are made here; b - cells mature here
thymus
T - cells mature here
spleen
lymphocytes reside; old erythrocytes are destroyed
Peyer’s Patches
monitoring intestinal bacteria populations and preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria
First Fact
Caused by a worm that lives in lymphatic vessels and released eggs into circulatory system
Second Fact
It is a neglected tropical disease along with rabies and yaws
Third Fact
Most area affected by elephantiasis are poor and tropical weather
Fourth Fact
4 groups of NTDs are protozoa, bacteria, helminth, and viral, elephantiasis falls under helminth
Fifth Fact
Mosquitos (known as vectors) can bite someone and move the larvae to another person to transmit the disease
