Basic Speed Law
A California law stating that you may never drive faster than is safe for present conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.
Uphill Parking Wheel Placement
Positioning your front wheels turned away from the curb (to the left) when parking facing uphill on a street with a curb so the back of the tire rests against the curb if the brakes fail.
Three Feet for Safety Act
California law requiring drivers to allow a minimum clearance of at least 3 feet when passing a bicyclist.
Slow-Moving Vehicle Turnout Requirement
A rule requiring slow-moving vehicles on a two-lane highway to pull off into a designated turnout area whenever 5 or more vehicles are queued closely behind them.
Zero Tolerance Law
California law making it illegal for a driver under the age of 21 to operate a vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.01% or higher.
Solid Yellow Line Next to Broken Yellow Line
A road marking pattern where passing is permitted only for traffic traveling on the side adjacent to the broken yellow line.
Form SR 1
A California DMV traffic collision report form that must be submitted within 10 days if anyone was injured or killed, or if total property damage exceeds $1,000.
Blue Painted Curb
A curb marking designating parking areas strictly reserved for disabled persons displaying a valid placard or special license plate.
Residential District Speed Limit
The default California speed limit of 25 mph in residential or business districts unless otherwise posted.
Red Painted Curb
A curb marking indicating a strict no-stopping zone reserved for fire lanes or safety hazards.
Headlight Mandate Period
The legally required timeframe to use low-beam headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise, or whenever visibility is poor.
Steep Narrow Mountain Road Right-of-Way
A rule stating that when two vehicles meet where neither can pass, the vehicle facing uphill has the right-of-way, and the vehicle facing downhill must back up.
Hydroplaning Recovery Method
The practice of easing your foot off the gas pedal gradually without braking hard to regain tire contact with wet pavement.
School Bus Flashing Red Lights Rule
Requirement for drivers traveling in either direction to stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights, unless on a divided, multi-lane highway moving in the opposite direction.
Emergency Vehicle Following Distance
The required minimum distance of at least 300 feet that must be maintained when following behind an emergency vehicle with active sirens or flashing lights.
Two Solid Double Yellow Lines (Spaced 2+ Feet)
Pavement markings that indicate a solid physical barrier; drivers may not cross or execute a U-turn over them except at designated openings.
Child Passenger Restraint System Mandate
California law requiring children under age 8 to be secured in a rear-seat child restraint system unless they are at least 4 feet 9 inches in height.
Gridlock Prevention
The requirement to stay out of an intersection until traffic moves enough to cross completely, even if the light is green.
Move Over Law
California law requiring drivers approaching a stationary emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights on the freeway to change lanes into an available non-adjacent lane or reduce speed.
Turn Signal Distance Requirement
The distance of at least 100 feet before a turn or lane change during which a continuous signal must be given.
Stuck Accelerator Procedure
The emergency recovery procedure of shifting the vehicle into neutral disengaging the engine, applying the brakes, and steering off the road safely.
Blind Intersection Speed Limit
The default speed limit of 15 mph in an alley or an intersection where you cannot see 100 feet in either direction.
Parallel Parking Curb Distance
The legal requirement that both right-side wheels must be parallel to and within 18 inches of the curb on a level street.
Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability
A document that a seller or transferor of a vehicle must submit to the California DMV within 5 days of selling or transferring ownership.
Center Left-Turn Lane Distance Limit
The maximum distance of 200 feet that a driver is legally permitted to travel inside a dedicated center left-turn lane.
Fire Hydrant Parking Distance
The minimum distance of at least 15 feet required between a parked vehicle and a fire hydrant.
Under-18 Wireless Phone Exception
The single exception permitting drivers under age 18 to use a wireless device while driving, restricted strictly to contacting emergency services.
No-Zone
The large blind spot areas surrounding a commercial truck where the driver cannot see other vehicles in their side mirrors.
First-Offense DUI Base Fine
The standard minimum base fine range of $390 to $1,000 imposed for a first DUI conviction in California, excluding penalty assessments and court fees.
Blind Railroad Crossing Speed Limit
The speed limit of 15 mph applied within 100 feet of a crossing where tracks cannot be seen for 400 feet in both directions and there are no warning signals.
